Signifying the New Normal--COVID Signage in K-12 schools

We are not very near yet to witnessing the end of the pandemic as it seems to be getting more widespread with every passing day.

The coronavirus has upended the norm of our normal lives. It has changed the way how we interact with everything be it school or workspaces we must learn to communicate by being within the occupied spaces. The familiar spaces will have new protocols and we will have to get accustomed to the new habits for the wellness of the communities.

If the new practices are followed properly, the old environments would respond to the COVID situation efficiently which makes it viable to survive in a post-pandemic environment. In an academic institution, graphics is a better option for the major transition. It’s high time that we take mandatory steps when children return to new normal spaces. The signage or signs helps in making people understand about their environments and would help them to know what is expected of them in certain spaces

The COVID signage is to draw attention to students and deliver the purpose quickly. If there are small signs like to maintain social distancing posted in different spaces it would be easy for teachers to manage them in large gatherings such as libraries, cafeterias, playgrounds, and gyms.

It majorly depends on the audience to determine the size, wording, or color of the signs. In an office environment, the signage would be to remind employees to adhere to the new protocols and alert visitors to act inside the premises whereas in schools the ideal signage should include fewer wordings and more graphics or imagery to make it more appealing to a younger audience. As the age of the audience increases the more technical wordings can be included to give directives.

The signage should be clear and helpful while designing because these are used to deliver the message to the recipient. For instance, in terms of colors, dark colors are to be strictly avoided like red which gives a feeling of alert or danger. For younger ones, brighter colors work better and mature colors like grays and blues would grab the attention of adults. There is also an option to pull colors from the school’s logo and customize it to give a unique touch.

The COVID signage should be helpful in any place especially in schools as life resumes and every signage should serve the purpose. The motive to introduce signage is because the guidelines to practice is still vague for some people and these signs will be able to convey messages simply and provide safety and security in this ever-changing world
