The transitional phase of education in the 21st century gives emphasis on the overall outlook of the institution because in today’s scenario the external appearance speaks a lot about the quality of the school. This is the environment where students spend most, so to give them a comfortable space is a huge responsibility which requires great attention to detailing while planning and designing.

Apparently, seamless use of technology, interaction between teachers and students, meeting instructors would enhance with the right kind of furniture not only inside the classroom but in other diverse spaces within the campus.

As a matter of fact, furniture is a part of changing educational scenario in terms of teaching and learning approaches which has witnessed an evolution and a revolution at the same time.

The furniture is indeed dynamic and this type of dynamism is included in curriculum, technology, and other spaces. When the right furniture fits the school ambiance, it reflects on the performance of children and the upliftment of the school’s stature.

The usage of flexible furniture is 21st-century demand which is mainly focused for multipurpose use. This would cut the cost of buying furniture in bulk for different things and also minimum school accessories are the ideal way to create maximum spaces.

Let’s take the case of computer labs to give an explicit idea about Flexible Furniture. Tables with convertible surfaces- with lowering and raising monitors, computer labs can be turned into the multipurpose classroom or vice versa. This system is useful in crowded classrooms where the students would not waste their time surfing on the internet. Such versatility would make a difference while expanding or renovating spaces. There is a continuous emphasis on on-campus facilities that is responsive to the needs of modern education.

The tablet armchair can be made available in distinct colors which has a bag rack or a hook where students can hang their bags on their chair itself. The implementation of tables and chairs would mark a shift from traditional seating arrangement to discussion circles.

The active furniture has also started appearing in learning spaces. Task chairs are currently running with seats detached from the floor and the base of the chair has a low table to keep laptops or other small essential items. Gone are the times when classrooms were filled with benches and desks with a chair and table for the instructor. The school authorities used to give minimal focus to interior design and structure but currently, these are taken specific care to provide a comfortable environment. If not it will directly have an effect on the child’s development

Flexible furniture allows for self –directed learning which can be used individually or in small groups. Use of all –in- one chair that encourages mobility would help them and bring all their things in one place.

As per the observation, schools in the past were hindering social gatherings as the student-teacher- interaction is considered to be crucial in the learning process. For instance, generally, middle school students are always restless and active. They require space for their body movement but the furniture that was available did not match up to their active persona. So the furniture became a complete distraction.

Sometimes the scenario that we used to witness in the past was students working together in small groups on the floor. The tables would be too heavy which was the reason for students to desist from using tables to work together. Such kinds of amenities were holding back students to get involved in the learning process creatively and conveniently.

The initiation of flexible furniture offered soft seating groups, stools, from small mobile tables with provision of height adjustment to large tables incorporated with technology and these are flexible and durable that fit individual needs and lifestyles. This shows that we are moving towards a generation that completely relies on feasible education for a holistic and better curricular growth.
