Green School Architecture, learning through natural resources

The nature and sustainability of schools go hand in hand for educating our children to prepare them to face the future world. Lessons on how to lend their hand on establishing productive eco- friendly schools would let them get a glimpse of the significance of nature in their everyday lives.

Green schools, a cost effective strategy is an efficient way to advocate the implementation of natural resources in school interiors and designs to benefit learners in the long run. Conservation of our natural surroundings and maximizing the use of green products is running widely which set forth the idea to make academic institutions appealing to a wide mass by going green.

The advantages of green schools extend beyond economic gains which provide educational opportunities that conventional schools might not be able to provide. Water conservation features, renewable energy generation and other green technologies will provide opportunities for hands on learning experience and a surge in student performance. In a study conducted in USA revealed 15% reduction in student absenteeism and increase in academic scores.

One of the major factors of green schools that contribute to an increase in student performance is the openness and daylight. Studies have proven that daylight is a prominent source to stimulate student’s mind and there is also an increase in their learning outcome.

However, it is difficult to prove that green school enhances learning but these offers a more tangible benefit in terms of pedagogical quality.

Evidently, architecture is going to be the basic parameter for setting a standard for learning institutions. There are many schools that offer exceptional building features and improves the overall awareness of students in attaining educational experience. All these elements integrated together serves as a hallmark for high performance schools.

In case of green schools, there are numerous examples that contribute to green design strategies which let students be environmentally responsible. For instance, solar panels can be installed to teach students about electricity and light shelves can be used to teach geometry by allowing students to measure angle from the sunlight as it enters the building. Sundial can be created by using light and flagpole to teach about measurement of time.

These are just possibilities which probably need to be tested before integrating into the classroom arenas. But the important thing to consider while designing or planning is to check how these will fit into the curriculum. We can include ideas from school administrators, principle and teachers to make it more inclusive so that they would develop an attachment towards the institution.

When we include a variety of stakeholders, conclusions can be drawn on how the existing curriculum can aid to green facility or how green facility elements would enhance the curriculum strategies. When green design strategies are implemented carefully, the existing curriculum will double in an engaging manner by learning about the traditional learning concepts and also lesson on how building would create an impact on the environment from a very young age.

As a matter of fact, to execute this stakeholder need to have an understanding of how school architecture can possibly improve curriculum. When students understand the idea behind the concept of green schools will only lead to better collaboration from their side. So to create awareness in schools teachers should be trained about its significance, causes and the consequences on human beings and their surroundings. In this way green school will get better noticed and appreciated for the initiative.

The first challenge is to train teachers on the merits of a green building and afterwards teach them to use green design elements in their lessons. It’s important for teachers to know how to teach from direct sunlight instead of fluorescent bulbs. But once teachers are confident with the new method, it would relatively show in the high performances of school.

According to experts, clean and healthy spaces infused with natural lighting are ideal for learning environments. For India to go fully green in learning platforms seems to be a far- fetched dream but spreading awareness about these kinds of contemporary methods will develop inquisitiveness among people and eventually they will find ways to implement by undergoing an extensive research.
