The pandemic has disrupted education of atleast 90% of children worldwide with most of them facing all kinds of challenges to learn in a peaceful environment. From not getting sufficient internet connectivity to not being able to afford digital devices, the challenges faced by children and their families are limitless. Schools have shifted to remote learning by engaging students in various online activities but still absence of face to face learning and interacting with peers have hugely affected child’s mental health.

All the countries are taking distinct approaches on how to open schools and some places are specifically emphasizing on outdoor learning. According to the research, outdoor environment can boost mental well- being and enhance children’s motivation.

Traditionally, outdoor learning was practiced in Asian countries but now the benefits of outdoor education is known to everyone that it’s been executed in an organized way all over the world.

In many Asian countries, the dropout rate in primary, secondary and higher secondary is high as compared to the western countries. There are many reasons but one of the rarely considered reasons is quality of learning environment. Evidence shows dropout is due to children not feeling attracted with the traditional style of teaching and learning.

The outdoors or playgrounds should give children a space to relax and use their energy to its full potential in improving their mind and soul. This is the place where students will be able to play and develop motor skills in order to gain focus and attention and challenge them intellectually and physically to trigger their minds creatively.

An experiment was conducted in order to study about the kind of environment children prefer in playgrounds and surprisingly most of them wanted a place to explore and experiment and connect with nature. The well suited design for playground is a garden in the courtyard with different types of vegetation. There is also an option to install different loose materials like twigs, branches, seeds for mathematical problems. With these materials group activities can be initiated in an outdoor setting. In this way students will be leading to a progress in maths and science subjects which eventually would demonstrate not only in their scores but also a liking towards these subjects as generally students tend to dislike these complicated areas.

Hands on outdoor learning experience can make learning more engaging and interactive for everyone. This can also act as an advantage for those who have a zest for outdoor games and other sessions.

The playgrounds are the only medium through which students will become physically agile and improve motor skills. So, it is important to design them in a way that draws their attention to learning and understanding in an appropriate way.
